MOSCOW, FEBRUARY 6, 2015. PIR PRESS. “The Financial Action Task Force on Money Laundering (FATF) and the UN have been working together in combating the WMD proliferation financing since 2012. The WMD proliferation is on the agenda of the Security Council and is defined as a threat to international peace and security. The FATF is not competing with the UN Security Council but has a subordinate role monitoring national execution of the relevant financial provisions of the Security Council resolutions”, – Vladimir Nechaev, FATF President (2013-2014).

The latest issue of the newsletter came out on the fourth anniversary of entry in force of the new START treaty and is specifically looking into the efforts to reach agreements on the most pressing global security issues. The hands of the Doomsday Clock were recently moved to three minutes to midnight illustrating an urgent need of international cooperation for preserving peace and security.   

In an interview for the Yaderny Kontrol independent analytic Dmitry Kovchegin has commented on the state of Russian-US cooperation on nuclear security (in Russian). Research Fellow at the National Research University Higher School of Economics Yulia Sveshnikova explained how the visit of the Russian Defence Minister was seen in Tehran (in Russian). PIR Center “Russia and Nuclear Nonproliferation” program Director Andrey Baklitskiy made his predictions on the developments in case the Iranian nuclear talks collapse (in Russian).

International organizations play an important role in preserving the global security. In his interview the President of Financial Action Task Force on Money Laundering (FATF) in 2013-2014, Vladimir Nechaev told us how the organization supports the global nonproliferation regime (in Russian). According to Mr. Nechaev, “The FATF and the UN have been working together in combating the WMD proliferation financing since 2012.
